Carbamazepine (Tegretol) is an effective and inexpensive anti-epileptic drug (AED). It is used alone or in combination with other medications to control certain types of seizures in patients with epilepsy. Tegretol is also used to treat Bipolar Disorder, Peripheral Neuropathy, Dystonia, Neuralgia, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Schizoaffective Disorder.
As with many AEDs, a broad range of doses is used, with the final "maintenance" dose normally determined by trial and error. Certain known gene variants could influence response to these medicines1 Several studies1 - 6 have shown that genetic variants in SCN1A and SCN2A genes could have an impact on the likelihood of a response to treatment of epilepsy with Tegretol.
