  • At age 71 I found myself depressed and anxious about the least stress.

A recent change to a Paleo-like diet (reduced bread, milk, and sugar, increased fruits and vegetables, high protien) preceded my level of anxiety and depression increasing. (cause-effect unknown.)

Adding back some bread and sugar experimentally. Moderation in all things is now my motto.

I have experienced the same thing after 3 months on Paleo diet, felt much worse, like I was seriously deficient on something. I started back with rice in small quantities, felt much better. The problem is that the sugar cravings came back, Paleo diet helped enormously with that. Would love to hear more about what you find.

I have both a cyp2d6 and a MAOa genes. The cyp2d6 makes me a poor metaboliser of Tyramine as well as many drugs. The back up for tyramine is the MOAa. So the tyramine in fermented food kills me. Heart attacks and chest pains. Pizza and beer are the worst. I was GF for years, lately found it's not the gluten, it's the tyramine. So, the lack of the cyp action overloads the MAOa, even in people with good MAO. And since MAO is useful in balancing brain chemistry, you do not want to overload it with tyramine. Or you'll get depression.

Look into a low tyramine diet. Basically avoid aged fermented foods. Like yeasted breads )(quick breads OK), hard cheese, hard salamis. Beer. Stale fish.

I believe the CYP2D6 poor metabolizers can account for the whole anti-gluten thing, short of Celiacs. And also the supposed benefits to the Paleo stuff. The snp for that is in 16% of the population.

ok we have same genes.. This is how i fixed mine : http://www.iherb.com/Thorne-Research-Amino-Complex-Berry-Flavor-8-1-oz-231-g/58567 Order that it has precursor amino acids if you have issues with your gut. you will be compromised from digesting properly. Take only 15% of the recommended scoop dosage don't take the whole thing. Do this every 2 days for 1.5 weeks.. all your depression should go away. and if you get shakey theres tyrosine in it which makes more dopamine which will make you non shakey. but too much of a good thing can make you shakey thats why only take a bit of the scoop. You will be amazed

If you're going back on bread, you might want to ask your doctor or nutritionist about the benefits of using gluten free brands. I've heard many good things - even for people without a proven gluten allergy.
